How Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) Works

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) pairs ketamine dosing sessions with structured psychotherapy — preparation sessions beforehand, a therapist present (or immediately available) during the medicine session, and integration sessions afterward to process the experience. The premise is that ketamine's window of psychological flexibility can deepen therapeutic work on trauma, entrenched depression, and anxiety.

KAP is offered both by psychiatric clinics with in-house therapists and by licensed psychotherapists who partner with prescribers for the medical side. Dosing is usually oral (troches) or IM at levels chosen to keep patients able to engage with the therapist.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

A typical arc: one or two preparation sessions, then 2–3 hour medicine sessions (therapist present) spaced one to three weeks apart, each followed by a 50-minute integration session. Programs commonly run four to eight medicine sessions.
